Birkenstock Blooms in the Desert

What a long journey it has been.  Let me introduce myself…my name is Mary and I own Desert Birkenstock in Las Vegas.

Over 30 years ago I bought my first pair of Birkenstock - navy Arizona’s - after a vacation in Mexico with my girlfriend.  I remember she had only one pair of shoes with her - her Birkenstock. Upon first seeing her Birkenstock, I remarked that they were "the ugliest shoes I'd ever seen."  I’ll admit though I was impressed that after walking all over Puerto Vallarta her feet were pain free, which mine certainly were not!  Anyway, after returning from vacation I went out and bought a pair.  And I've been a Birkenstock devotee ever since.

While working as a Respiratory Therapist, I wore my Birkenstock full time. I was constantly being asked about my shoes because they looked so comfortable. Everyone wanted to know where they could get a pair.  That's when the idea of opening a store took hold.  I realized there are so many people who work on their feet in Las Vegas; besides hospital employees, there were thousands of hotel and casino workers as well….a lot of people who could benefit from healthy and comfortable footwear. Back then, comfortable footwear was pretty much unheard of.  So, I took a “gamble” and borrowed the money from my dad and opened a Birkenstock store on Father's Day in 1981.

Thank goodness I was young and inexperienced enough to not even realize that the country was in a recession, or I may of thought better of the idea.  Well the years of hard work paid off. I have many very satisfied customers and love helping people improve their lives through finding truly comfortable footwear. 

Now I have two stores, a website and a family helping run them.  My daughter-in-law Amy is our general manager, and my husband Gordon runs our Authorized Birkenstock Repair Department.  Our employees have been with us for years and are perhaps the most knowledgeable Birkenstock people I've ever known.  And we love having fun with our customers.  For our 21st Anniversary Party, “Elvis” came in and serenaded our customers in his blue suede Birkenstock, of course!

In a city of few independent retailers, we are proud to have had 27 years of success.  Our products are the best, our customers and friends are wonderful, and we love what we can do for them.  We're here to offer expert fitting and advice, foot clinics, physician referrals, and a huge selection of Birkenstock styles, as well as a complete repair and modification department.  If a customer wants a particular style we don't have, we'll get it for them, even if it means taking the order all the way to Germany!
